Cameo Locket

On an isle in a frozen lake
On a plane descending in the night
On a streak of bad luck
On top of the world

In the quiet hours before dawn
In the midst of my workday, hands cut and blistered
In the back of a movie theater
In the time of rememberance

When the moon is full
When the moon is new
When the moon is hidden by unseen clouds
When I pretend to be reading a newspaper

As I stare at my morning coffee
As I drive down the freeway
As I watch the sun sink behind the western sea
As I lie in the arms of another

From my window which looks out at the storied hills
From the place where I stood in the desert one day
From a sleepless motel room
From a state of failed forgetfulness

Before the fathomless ocean
Before the gathering storm
Before I lock my front door
Before I pull off my boots

Among friends
Among strangers
Among the tall trees
Among other fools like me

Under the stars
Under the empty sky
Under the spreading boughs
Under the boss's angry glare

Upon a mountain ridge
Upon a streetcar
Upon my word
Upon my life

I dream of you.
