Haiku are like sushi-- small treats that are seemingly simple, yet subtle and complex. The haiku form is a product of the japanese language and culture, but like the California roll, the American version has a certain deliciousness. There are a number of traditions that govern haiku, the least important of which is the 5-7-5 rule concerning the number of syllables in each of the three lines. Nonetheless, I have followed this rule with a few exceptions, and done my best to be true to the haiku traditions in spite of the subject matter.
